Because of the work of the Kaleo Center for Faith, Justice & Social Transformation, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities has taken a bold step. United is, to our knowledge, the first seminary in the nation to declare that the work of social justice is one of the core arts of ministry.
That’s…exceptionally cool. But what does it mean?
In the world of seminaries, the “arts of ministry” are where theology meets the real-world needs of congregations. The classic arts of ministry typically include: worship, preaching, pastoral care, religious education and spiritual formation, and congregational administration.
To add “advancing social justice” to that list means moving social justice from the periphery of congregational life to its center, and from a seminary add-on to a core requirement.
Step by step, the world is transformed.
