Nourishing the Soil with Ricardo Levins Morales

“Our most urgent task, then, is to restore the imagination to its rightful place at the center of our being. That’s the rich soil from which vision and strategy emerge.”  – Ricardo Levins Morales

Beloved Twin Cities organizer, agitator, and artist Ricardo Levins Morales works at the intersection of art and social movement making, offering love, insight, mischief, and humor as collective tools for liberation. As a nationally recognized political artist and writer, Ricardo has nurtured a generation of artists and activists who insist on seeing the world through a lens of connection and interdependence. We are thrilled to welcome Ricardo as our guest for September’s KaleoExpress, and we invite you to an intimate conversation with Ricardo about practices of healing, shared imagination, and the scope of change required of us in these times.

Join us for coffee, bagels, and other breakfast treats at 8:30 AM. Program starts at 9 AM. This KaleoExpress workshop is free, as always, but please registerso we know how much food to bring.

About the Artist

Ricardo Levins MoralesRicardo Levins Morales describes himself as a “healer and trickster organizer disguised as an artist.” He was born into the anti-colonial movement in his native Puerto Rico and was drawn into activism in Chicago when his family moved there in 1967. He left high school early and worked in various industries, and over time began to use his art as part of his activism. This activism has included support work for the Black Panthers and Young Lords to participating in or acting in solidarity with farmers, environmental, labor, racial justice and peace movements. Increasingly he has come to see his art and organizing practices as means to address individual, collective and historical trauma. He co-leads workshops on trauma and resilience for organizers as well as trainings on creative organizing, social justice strategy and sustainable activism, and mentors and supports young activists. His art has won numerous awards but the greatest affirmation is the uses to which is has been put by grassroots movements and communities.
